refugees in Jos Nigeria
A village attacked. Hundreds murdered in the middle of the night, and homes burned down by a group of Fulani herdsmen; the survivors remain homeless, refugees. Among the 2,600, there are 1,200 children, 37 orphaned. They are now in an IDP camp without clean drinking water, food, and clothing. Many are without shoes. It boggles the mind and burdens the heart to know children witnessed their parents being murdered and are now in a refugee camp. Classroom teachers have been the only source of help periodically through the day caring for the orphaned children. Many widowed adults coping with hunger are caring for their own children, and there are so many in need. …. read more.
Michelle Meloy Foundation
The Michelle Meloy Foundation was established to provide economic support to those around the world suffering from the lack of food, clean water, health care, clothing, schooling, and who are, or have been victims of trauma through war, poverty, political strife, and human solicitation and trafficking.
Orphanages are at the heart of the concept of the Michelle Meloy Foundation. In the forefront of the founder’s mind has always been, “No child should be alone—and living off the streets.” A lofty dream? Or, maybe it was just a wish—a silent prayer? Is it plausible? There is an old African proverb that says it takes a village to raise a child.” Teamed, a group of people and do a great many things, especially with the same goal, intent, heart and drive, they can do more than raise a child, they can lift them up, inspire them, motivate them, and reassure them they are unique—special—and have the God-given right to not only flourish, but to shine—and brightly.
In our society of immediacy and cellular phone preoccupation, it is easy to stay in your own mind cubicle, away from the rest of the world, in a bubble or cocoon of sorts, oblivious to the happenings in the world, especially in remote areas. But, people are suffering, and as the founder has said, “There is always someone worse off than me and someone worse off than that person—and so on.” So what is humanity? What does it mean to be human? Not a new question, rather a very old one, but when you see people helping each other in the smallest way and increments, you know that it is a bond shared, a connection exhibiting our sameness. We are not one person; we are one people, one planet—striving for unity. The Michelle Meloy Foundation was built with a team of people wanting give from their heart to see a better life for others, and a better world for mankind.
